Turn on the radio these days and someone will be offering contact lenses “from £5 a month”,

Sounds too good to be true?    'Fraid so........     

Generally if you wear modern disposable contact lenses you will need to pay for four distinct elements

(1)     The lenses ( £5 - £15 per month )

(2)     Solutions    ( about £5 a month )     Ah Ha!

(3)     Check ups every 6 months or so   ( £20 - £ 30 a go )

(4)     Annual sight tests without lenses.  ( £15 - £20 )

On top of this there will often be an initial “consultation fee” which could be £50 or more.

Also you will need to consider: 

The cost of updating your specs if necessary

What about prescription updates?

What about lens supply during holidays?

We have always preferred to quote a “total package” with no nasty surprises (see below)

Lets look at these costs in more detail:

The lenses themselves,

The most popular lenses these days are monthly disposable soft lenses. Most people can wear these comfortably for about 14 hours a day on average. They are easy to look after and are the best compromise between cost and comfort.

Expect these to cost between £4 and £7/ month

Solutions

These are absolutely essential for maintaining the comfort of lenses and health of your eyes.

(unless you wear one-day lenses) We supply two solutions, one for soaking and saline for rinsing, we find this combination gives better comfort and wear than a single solution. 

Expect these to add about £5 a month.

Check-ups

We suggest a check-up at least every 6 months (though you might need a lot more if you develop a problem) These are also useful for changes of prescription or care routine.

A contact lenses check up would normally cost about £25 on average

We offer unlimited check ups at a cost of under £1 a week. ( £48 / year )

 Annual eye examination without lenses

If you intend wearing lenses for any length of time it is wise to have an annual check without lenses. This will update your specs prescription as well as check the general health of your eyes. It is quite different from a contact lens check.

Expect to pay £15-£25 for a thorough check.

Finally you might be asked to pay an initial consultation fee and / or fitting fee this could be as much as £50 or more and can be payable before you even get to try lenses

So How does it all work?

Before we can fit you with lenses we need to perform a full eye examination without lenses, (fee £15 unless exempt) we fit a pair of lenses that you wear daily for a week. there is no charge for this trial.

A week later we check your eyes with lenses IN. If everything is OK we supply one months lenses for which fees are payable.

A standing order is set up to start at the end of this first month. Payment goes out every 3 months to coincide with your next collection.

You collect lenses and can have an eye check every 3 months. Any changes in prescription can be made and all fees are covered by the standing order.
